Jonestown Massacre Re-enactment

Background.

On November 18, 1978 at Jonestown, Guyana over 919 persons of the People's Temple perished by suicide/murder at a large tea-party. The Temple was having a rousing good time, having just offed U.S. Congressman Leo Ryan earlier that day. Mr. Jim Jones, the minister of the Temple, decided it would be best to celebrate with a juicy mixture of Kool-Aid(tm) and excessive amounts of tranquilizers. Rifles provided the finishing touches for the revelers. The entire affair was a rational reaction to the encroaching arms of the U.S. Imperialist System which had been systematically ostracizing Mr. Jones and his congregation for several years. Their escape was one into the next world, for, as Mr. Jones said himself, "I can see them coming!"

The Re-enactment.

The Order of Ten-Fat-Tigers thought it best to relive the joyous emotions felt by the members of the People's Temple. The Order wished to experience for themselves utter paranoia and mob mentality. So on February 26, 1997 the Order proceeded to stage a spontaneous event upon the Library Mall of the UW-Madison campus for all to enjoy, and take part in. A procession began with "Jim Jones" Granby reading excerpts from the transcripts of Mr. Jones' final testament (it having been recorded on audio-tape at the actual event) as his followers moaned in unison behind him.

Upon reaching the "FREE KOOL-AID" stand, and beating off way-ward homeless men, the followers received their sacremental Kool-Aid and knelt before Granby. On the word of drinking the "potion", the followers perished in unison. One unwilling follower attempted to escape, but had his potion forced down his mouth. One all had perished Granby burst into one of his usual, inane speeches [text].

Needless to say, the students of the UW received the event well. Many thanked the Order for showing just how exciting suicide can be if it is done correctly. Others expressed their desire to actually give their lives for Ten-Fat-Tigers.
