Would you condemn Jesus? He had long hair and worked for peace and harmony with nature (not that I'm implying that either one of us subscribe to the beliefs surrounding him). What about Einstein, or Thoreau?
Believe it or not, but not all "hippies" do drugs and glom off of others. Yes, there are a few that do, but generally "hippes" good natured people looking for a way to bring humanity together. Of course you can believe what you want, that's one of the few good things about this country, but you can't tell someone else how to live their lives or what to think. I would like to start off with a disclaimer--I am not a hippie. Just merely curious. Ok, so I was sent the link to your site by a really pissed off hippie. After exploring a little (ie the guestbook, skimming a few essays, etc) I am quite confused. I understand your dislike for hippies, especially the appearance factor--pure grime. But with regard to your assumption that the entire hippie movement is based on stupidity, I'd have to say that I disagree. First of all, like any significant cultural movement the original hippies formulated the ideals that they wished to live by. In response to the disillusionment of war and the time period in which they were living they rebelled against the 'establishment' by following their own credo. They recognized the importance of life, love, and the world in which they lived (nature--oh and by the way, it is beyond me how you can smugly denounce the importance of the world in which you live--why ignore the earth and perpetrate the destruction of your home???) Now, I respect the idealism of the hippie (or the original hippie intellect), but I do understand how you could denounce the blind followers. But isn't it true that most of the world follows blindly? how many people truly think for themselves and live a life governed by their own thinking/needs/beliefs?? The world is full of 'second-handers' (you ever read fountainhead by ayn rand??) and i just don't understand why you choose to hate the followers of this movement, why not hate them all--and if you do, then i'm sorry that your life is going to be a very long and weary journey. I have very little respect for people who do not think for themselves, but hating does not seem worth the energy or commitment. And if there is one thing to be learned from hippies (or anybody with any sense) violence is completely ridiculous. and if you must hate, why not hate the blind followers of your own little movement, rest assured that they will listen/follow whatever you say as long as they feel a part of something, besides the fact that hating/putting other people down is one of the surest ways to falsely feel a sense of self-worth.

I myself am Non-Denominational, and if you are so open minded, why must you focus so much hatred on these people? Open-mindedness tends to leave a little room for tolerance you know? I seriously doubt that you are more intelligent than all of these "hippies" you should really get to know one. So you are automatically better than everyone just because you already went through 4 years of college(probably took you about 7) and got into grad school? I don't think so. I guess you could label me as a "hippie" I go to Phish shows because their music is wonderful, but your not open-minded enough to realize that. I have been smoking pot and occassional other drugs for a few years, and gee, it hasn't affected me one bit! I was at the top of my class in high school, along with many of my "hippie" friends. I am already on the deans list here at college, and will be attending medical school in a few years. And i am not alone in this world to be like I am. So take all of your hate for the "peace loving hippies" and find some other way to branch out at society. You have to be a real winner in life if you spend all your time lashing out at people you dont like. So keep your opinions to yourself. thank you. --

I question what your definition of a "hippie" is. Is it someone that uses psychadelics or has liberal viewpoints or has long hair or smells or is stupid or is for peace? Is it all or just some of those characteristics? There seems to be some extreme stereotyping going on here. Lemme see here, I have short hair, shower regularly, I'm in grad school, I'm well read, I believe in equality and peace if possible and yes, I do like Phish and similar bands. Do I fit under your profile of a "hippie"? One more thing, yes, there are many pseudo-wannabee trendy hippy types out there, they are often hypocritical, but that shouldn't overshadow the fact that there are decent, thoughtful, liberal individuals out there.
